As the agency charged with transit planning for the six-county Northeastern Illinois region, the RTA implements projects, administers a variety of programs and develops plans aimed at growing ridership and improving mobility. The RTA also provides technical and analytical expertise to municipalities and transportation agencies across the region in support of local public transit initiatives. Many of these efforts are geared towards creating and preserving livable communities throughout Northeastern Illinois.
The RTA publishes documents that guide the future of the region’s transit system including the five-year Regional Transit Strategic Plan, the Chicago Regional Green Transit Plan and various resource guides.
Working with CTA, Metra, Pace and other stakeholders the RTA implements regionally significant projects including technology deployments, information signage installations and marketing campaigns.
Additionally, the RTA operates a performance measurement and reporting program that evaluates the impact and effectiveness of public transit in Northeastern Illinois. To support these regional efforts, the RTA maintains RTAMS, a data warehouse for planning and financial information on the region’s transit system.
