The 2016 Regional Ridership Report provides a brief overview of RTA system ridership compared to 2015. The report shows ridership from each Service Board (CTA, Metra, and Pace) by mode, line, and bus route group. Total system ridership decreased 3.2% compared to 2015 to 612.2 million passenger trips, with each Service Board experiencing ridership losses.
- CTA ridership totaled 497.7 million boardings. CTA bus, which makes up 52% of CTA ridership, experienced its fourth year of declining ridership. CTA rail ridership decreased for the first time in three years, by 1.3%.
- Metra ridership declined 1.6% in 2016 to 80.3 million passenger trips.
- Pace fixed-route bus ridership decreased 5.7% compared to 2015, its third year of decreased ridership. Significant increases were noted for Saturday and Sunday bus ridership.
- Other Pace services, such as ADA Paratransit, Dial-a-Ride, and Vanpool, experienced ridership losses in 2016; the Taxi Access Program saw significant ridership gains although it constitutes a very small percentage of Pace ridership.
