Rider Resources

The RTA is committed to assuring that riders in our region—regardless of income, age or physical ability—have access to and understand how to use the region’s transit system.  To achieve that, the RTA offers a range of customer services. 

Customer Service

The RTA Customer Service Centers are specifically tasked with serving nearly 450,000 riders who qualify for reduced fare, ride free or ADA Paratransit permits.

Reduced Fare and Ride Free Permits

The RTA issues Reduced Fare and Ride Free permits to eligible riders throughout the region.  The RTA Reduced Fare Permit allows older adults, age 65 and older, and qualified people with disabilities and Medicare recipients to ride all RTA fixed-route services (regularly scheduled CTA, Metra and Pace buses or trains in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will Counties) at a reduced fare.  Additionally, in accordance with state law, the RTA issues Ride Free Permits for all RTA fixed-route services to any Illinois resident who is enrolled in the Illinois Department of Aging Benefit Access Program. 

Mobility Management Program

The RTA's Mobility Management Program helps customers with disabilities and older adults access ADA-accessible transit in the RTA region.

Mobility Management staff offer the following FREE services for older adults and people with disabilities throughout the RTA region:

  • Provide groups with Transit Orientation Presentations.
  • Provide transit information and RTA Program assistance at outreach events and resource fairs.
  • Provide one-on-one Travel Training to individuals in their communities.

ADA Paratransit Certification Program

The RTA manages the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Paratransit Certification Program, which determines eligibility for complementary paratransit service operated by Pace throughout the region’s ADA service area. More than 18,000 applications are received each year and there are more than 64,000 eligible customers across the RTA Region. The RTA ADA Paratransit Certification Program is nationally recognized as a best-practice model and the region’s ADA Paratransit service is fully compliant with ADA regulations. ADA Paratransit service is an advanced reservation, shared ride, origin-to-destination service for persons who are unable to use the CTA or Pace systems for some or all of their trips because of their disability or health condition.
